The following is an excerpt on DOE desinged experiment techniques from Six Sigma Demystified (2011, McGraw-Hill) by Paul Keller.
Degrees of Freedom - A measure of how many runs are available to form an estimate of a parameter. Each parameter estimate absorbs one degree of freedom from the total number of degrees of freedom available. Before any estimates are made, the number of degrees of freedom available equals the number of independent data values.
